Public Lecture Title: The Hidden Curricula of Competitive Individualism and its Roots in Business Education

"I will focus on problematizing the unstated norms, values, and beliefs imbedded within business education and incorporated more broadly into the neoliberal university. I introduce competitive individualism to characterize the hidden curricula that prepares 91´«Ã½ for a by-gone world, or at least one inconsistent with values of the Global racial and ethnic majority. I highlight and meld the hidden curricula across other academic disciplines to reimagine business education."

Oscar Jerome Stewart is concerned with power within organizations and power of organizations, and how to create more equitable and cooperative power structures that bind members together in a beneficent mutuality. Currently, Professor Stewart is working on projects on corporate misconduct, discrimination in higher education, and critical business pedagogy.

Before joining the College of Charleston’s School of Business, he was an Assistant Professor of Sustainable Business at San Francisco State University (SFSU). His is an author of journal articles, book chapters, and case studies that address business ethics, corporate social responsibility, and sociological and organizational theoretical perspectives. He has taught courses on Organizational Behavior, Business & Society, Business Ethics, Society, and Sustainability, Strategic Management, and Ethical Business Practices, and has served as a Facilitator for the Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Pedagogies of Inclusive Excellence in Online Teaching Institute at SFSU’s Center for Equity & Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CEETL).

Professor Stewart has been recognized globally for his teaching innovation. Most recently, he was awarded the prestigious 2020 Ideas Worth Teaching Award from The Aspen Institute Business & Society Program. Among other previous honors, he was awarded the 2019-2020 CEETL High Impact Teaching Award, was selected as a 2019 ELEVATE Fellow at the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions, was awarded the SFSU Affordable Instructional Materials (AIM) Grant, and was selected as one of three university attendees for the 2018 Aspen Institute Business & Society Program.

In his spare time, Professor Stewart loves to rehabilitate troubled dogs and can be seen traversing the low country with his two dogs, Sho Nuff the Shogun of the Low Country and Assata Shakur.

Professor Stewart earned a B.A. in Finance & African American Studies from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina Charlotte’s Interdisciplinary Organizational Science Program.
