Lindley Counseling Mission Statement
As part of an institution of higher learning, Lindley Counseling – in ongoing partnership with the campus community – fully embrace our roles as both clinicians and educators to cultivate healing, empowerment, and growth.
As clinicians, we aim to introduce evidence-based therapeutic approaches that explore reactions to life experiences, address invisible wounds, and improve our responses to distress.
As educators, we strive to enhance nuance in thinking, activate curiosity around our place and purpose in community, and foster dialogue around factors that impact our collective wellbeing.
Lindley Counseling Values
Words like “mental health” and “anxiety” are frequently used to express our challenges. These labels can oversimplify our nuanced realities and diminish the fullness of our distinct experience. Many of our struggles can be conceptualized as understandable reactions to normal developmental stressors. When we personalize our emotional vocabulary to voice what we are thinking and feeling, we find our individual place in the richness and messiness of being human. This helps us connect with others, reminding us that we are not uniquely broken, damaged, or defective. Look beyond labels.
No matter where our wellbeing falls on the spectrum of thriving to struggling, embracing connection, vulnerability, nuance, and uncertainty can elevate wellness. None of these practices are easy. They ask us to loosen our dependence on certainty and control. These moments often push us to the edge of our comfort circle, where unfamiliarity can leave us feeling off-balance. Yet, that is the exact place where perspective and growth increase. Embrace discomfort.
We all want to succeed and find security in life. Overvaluing achievements (the product) makes us vulnerable to cycles of perfectionism and comparison that can spiral into feeling tired, lonely, and afraid. Our value is inherent. We are enough, regardless of achievements or what is on a resume. Taking on a growth mindset and welcoming the struggle of the process increases resiliency, distress tolerance, and flexibility, leading to a redefined vision of “success” that hosts a much more enjoyable journey. Invest in the process.
Our modern world has out-evolved the biology of our brains and bodies. Notifications explode on social media and news outlets. Text and email norms expect us to be accessible 24/7. To-do lists and commitments stretch on and on. “Busy-ness” is currency. We live with a perpetual sense of urgency and immediacy, anticipating the future and ruminating about the past. We were built for simpler times. There is power in gratitude, mindfulness, and restoration. We do not need to constantly be “doing.” “Being” in the present is enough. Slow down.
All boats rise and fall with the tide. Our individual wellness is inextricably linked to the collective wellbeing of the W&L community. We cannot reach our full potential unless we all do. Some individuals and subcommunities face systemic barriers, and these barriers hinder everyone’s ability to thrive. Looking out for the wellness of another is a radical act that ultimately serves everyone. Leave no General behind.
