FAQ
For Students
No need to prep – come as you are! So you have a sense of what to expect, the counselor will want to get a quick snapshot of your life, hear about a core concern(s), and understand how it is impacting you. You will then co-create a plan for next steps, if that is useful. It can also be a one-time consultation.
There are no limits on individual sessions, and most group counseling or outreach experiences can be repeated if they were particularly useful! Most 91传媒 find they get what they need in 2-6 sessions. Some 91传媒 benefit from longer term work to address more complex challenges. You and your counselor will figure out frequency based on your individual needs. Follow-up counseling appointments are typically every two weeks.
All information gathered at Lindley Counseling is confidential. Your information will not be shared unless you have signed an ROI (Release of Information) granting specific permission. Sometimes we are required by law to share information, such as in the event of an emergency or life-threatening situation. If you have specific questions, you can talk more specifically about this during the Wellness Consult.
That is stressful. And a common reaction. Generals Guidance is designed to provide support and consultation to the W&L campus on these very issues. Among other things, it can be useful to share your concerns, learn a skill to feel more sturdy if/when you decide to talk with your friend, examine your own boundaries in the relationship, and identify other campus departments who might helpful. You can schedule a Generals’ Guidance appointment by calling Lindley Counseling at 540-458-8590.
Every single person can benefit from a counseling relationship. And most of what people struggle with are understandable reactions to life stress, so really, a student can schedule a Wellness Consult for anything on their mind. There is no “typical” profile of someone seeking counseling. Also, we have seen and heard it all…
For Faculty/Staff/Administrators
A student can contact Lindley Counseling at 540-458-8590 or come in-person to the Lindley Center for Student Wellness at 200 E. Denny Circle, first floor. A student’s first appointment is a Wellness Consult, which is a 30-minute appointment where a counselor will get a quick snapshot of the student’s life, hear about a core concern(s), and understand how it is impacting the student. Next steps are collaboratively discussed, or it can be a one-time consultation.
It is normal to feel uncertain about how/if to reach out. An academic career does not necessarily prepare you for this! Generals’ Guidance might be a great resource for you, as it is a one-on-one supportive consultation for anyone at W&L. Some relevant things to talk about could be how to best support the student, assertive communication skills, honoring and “trusting your gut,” and familiarizing yourself with other campus supports. It is always relieving to feel more confident if/when you chose to talk with a student. You can schedule a Generals’ Guidance appointment by calling Lindley Counseling at 540-458-8590.
These requests are handled by Lauren Kozak, who is the Title IX Coordinator and Director of Disability Resources. Lindley Counseling does not provide evaluations or accommodation letters for 91传媒.
Yes, please! You can contact Dave Salge, Associate Director & Education, Training and Outreach Coordinator to talk about your request.
No. We do maintain a list of local and off-campus providers and are happy to share these resources, as we update them annually. W&L also partners with Carilion Clinic to offer an Employee Assistance Program.
For Parents/Families
College is a time of significant transition – personally, socially, and academically – and counseling can help 91传媒 navigate these changes with greater resilience and self-awareness. Working with a W&L counselor also means the provider understands the specific context, pressures, and culture of W&L, which can make support more relevant and effective. We embrace our roles as both clinicians and educators to support your student’s growth and contentment as they figure out their place in college.
While this is understandably concerning as a parent, 91传媒 are encouraged to schedule appointments for themselves. If they will not schedule an appointment and you remain concerned, please contact the Dean’s Office to share your observations.
We do not provide family therapy. Your child can ask their counselor for recommendations, as we maintain a list of local and off-campus providers.
As part of the tuition and benefits, all counseling sessions are completely free of charge to enrolled W&L 91传媒. TELUS, our 24/7 teletherapy platform, is also free of charge to enrolled 91传媒.
Medication management services are free, though there could be a cost or co-pay associated with any prescribed medications.
This would be a case-by-case discussion. If your child is currently working with a home provider, we encourage them to talk through whether a transition of care makes sense. A student may also schedule a Wellness Consult to discuss their current support system and help identify the most appropriate path forward, whether that is continuing with their home therapist, collaborating on treatment goals with multiple providers, or transferring care to our center.
